Why Modern Couples Break Up Over ‘Small Things’ — And How Social Media is Fueling It

It’s the little things or so they say. But in today’s world, those “small things” can pile up faster than a TikTok scroll session, and before you know it, a relationship that seemed solid is suddenly on shaky ground.

From arguments over who didn’t text back first, to disagreements about what counts as “liking” someone else’s post, modern couples face a new set of challenges ones our parents’ generation could hardly imagine. Social media, while connecting us, has also amplified insecurity, jealousy, and unrealistic expectations.

Take the “story comparison” trap, for example. Scrolling through endless highlight reels of friends, influencers, and exes can make your own relationship feel like it’s falling short even when it’s perfectly fine. Suddenly, minor disagreements over chores or date nights feel monumental, because in your feed, everyone else seems to be living the perfect romance.

Then there’s the endless overthinking of digital cues. Did they leave you on read? Why did they comment on a stranger’s post? These small digital breadcrumbs can ignite arguments that have nothing to do with your actual relationship, but everything to do with perception.

And yet, it’s not all doom and gloom. Awareness is key. Couples who communicate openly about boundaries with social media, and who check in with each other beyond the notifications and likes, tend to navigate these “small things” without letting them spiral. It’s about remembering that love isn’t a feed it’s real life, messy, imperfect, and beautiful.

In the end, maybe it’s not the small things themselves that break couples up it’s letting external pressures and digital noise dictate how we feel about each other. The next time a tiny argument arises, pause before reacting. Ask yourself: is this about them, or is it about the world we’re scrolling through?
